Paediatric care for Medavakkam parents: what to know
The first time your child has a fever after you move to Medavakkam, you’ll wish you’d already figured this out. Here’s the orienting guide we share with every new family — plus what we think every Medavakkam parent should have ready at home.
A disclaimer up front: we’re a preschool, not a medical provider. Nothing below is medical advice. It’s practical orientation. For anything specific, see your paediatrician.
Types of care available around Medavakkam
- Neighbourhood paediatric clinics — Vadakapattu Main Road and Velachery Road have several established paediatric practices. Ask neighbours; families in BHEL Nagar and Sabari Nagar usually converge on two or three trusted names.
- Larger multi-specialty hospitals — Apollo Spectra, Kauvery, Vijaya Hospital and MIOT are within 20–40 minutes. For anything serious, most Medavakkam families drive to Adyar Apollo or MIOT.
- Pharmacies that stock children’s medicines — any local pharmacy will have paracetamol (Calpol), but ask specifically for suspension forms (syrup) — not all keep stock of every brand.
- 24-hour options — most 24-hour pharmacies and emergency rooms are along Velachery Road or towards Adyar. Map the nearest one on Day 1.
Choosing a paediatrician
Two good tests:
- Do they listen? A paediatrician who cuts off a 3-year-old mid-sentence is not your paediatrician.
- Do they explain the reasoning? “This syrup because X, try for 3 days, come back if Y” is better than “Just give this and see.”
Don’t switch based on one bad visit, but do switch if the pattern doesn’t fit your family.
The first-aid box every Medavakkam family should have
- Paracetamol paediatric syrup (Calpol / equivalent) — age-appropriate dosage
- Digital thermometer
- ORS sachets (3–4)
- Band-aids of various sizes
- Antiseptic liquid (Dettol / Savlon)
- Cotton and gauze pads
- Your paediatrician’s card + nearest hospital number on the fridge
- Mosquito repellent (cream-based, age-appropriate)
- Saline nasal drops
When to worry vs when to wait-and-watch
General rough guide (not a substitute for medical judgement):
- Fever under 101°F, child eating and playing: watch, hydrate, tylenol if uncomfortable.
- Fever over 102°F, or lasting more than 48 hours: paediatrician.
- Fever with rash, very lethargic, or refusing all liquids: hospital.
- Any injury where you’re unsure: err on the side of care. Paediatric ERs are used to non-urgent visits.
The worst medical decisions happen in panic. Have the numbers, have the box, and know the route — so you’re never making choices from zero.
Vaccinations
Most Medavakkam paediatricians follow the IAP (Indian Academy of Paediatrics) schedule. Keep a vaccination card with dates. Preschool admissions increasingly ask for copies.
What we watch for at school
Our teachers are trained to spot fever, dehydration, allergic reactions, and behaviour changes early. If we call you, please don’t wait — come pick up. Better to err on the side of caution with a 2-year-old.
Health and safety first, always
We keep classrooms clean, cool and child-safe. Ask about our illness policy and first-aid training on your visit.
