Daycare vs preschool in Chennai: which does your child actually need?

Both parents working. A grandparent who can’t do full days anymore. A child who is getting bored at home. This is the family that asks us the daycare-or-preschool question — and the honest answer depends on just three things.

The three-question test

  1. How long does your child need to be out of home each day? Preschool is usually 3–4 hours. Daycare typically 6–10.
  2. Is the primary goal care, or learning? They’re both fine. Just know which one you’re buying.
  3. What age is your child? Under 18 months: daycare territory. Over 2: preschool is usually enough.

The hybrid model (what most working Chennai parents actually do)

The combo: preschool 8:30 – 2:00, daycare extension until 5:30 or 6:00. Your child gets structured learning in the morning when energy is high, a nap, then unstructured supervised play until pickup. A lot of Medavakkam and Pallikaranai families choose this.

iPlay iLearn offers exactly this blend. Ask about our extended hours — we’ll walk through what a hybrid day looks like.

When daycare alone is the right call

  • Child is under 18 months (too young for preschool anyway).
  • You need 10+ hours of care every day and can’t split.
  • Your child is still settling in after a move or major family change.

When preschool alone is the right call

  • One parent is home by 2:00 pm, or a grandparent can do pickup.
  • Child is 2.5+ years old and ready to learn in a group.
  • You want maximum structured learning for your fee budget.
Daycare is about where your child is safe. Preschool is about what your child learns. Most families need some of both.

Need both? We do both.

iPlay iLearn offers preschool in the morning and extended daycare into the evening. Come see how it works.
