Chennai summer and small children: staying cool at preschool

April and May in Chennai are not kind to a 3-year-old. Heat, humidity, and a small body that hasn’t learned to regulate well yet. Here’s what we do at school — and what you can mirror at home — to keep preschoolers cool, hydrated and happy.

The Chennai-summer reality for a small child

Preschoolers sweat less efficiently, tire faster, and don’t always remember to ask for water. A 4-year-old playing for 20 minutes in April at 36°C is the equivalent of an adult jogging in 42°C. Tiny bodies need disproportionately more intervention.

The school-day checklist (8:30 am – 2:00 pm)

  • Cotton uniforms only. No synthetics. Loose fit.
  • Water bottle that’s already cool at drop-off. Refill once at mid-morning break.
  • Small wet towel or cloth in the bag — for wipe-downs after play.
  • Cap or hat if the child will be in the open courtyard. (We keep some spare school-issued caps too.)
  • No heavy lunches. See our summer lunchbox ideas.
  • Light footwear — rubber slippers or open sandals. No closed shoes unless required.

At home: three routines that help

  1. Water before breakfast. Build the habit of drinking a small glass of water first thing. Children wake slightly dehydrated.
  2. Cool-down evenings. A short cool water splash on arms and feet before dinner does wonders for sleep.
  3. Earlier bedtime in April and May. 8:30 pm beats 9:30 pm. Heat exhausts small children faster than cold does.

Hydration signs to watch for

  • Fewer wet nappies or washroom visits than usual
  • Dry lips, sunken eyes, irritability
  • Refusing water while asking for sweet drinks
  • Flushed face with no sweat

Any two of these together = cool the child down, offer water or ORS, and skip outdoor play for the rest of the day. Three or more = call the paediatrician.

A 3-year-old won’t tell you they’re dehydrated. They’ll just get cranky, then quiet. You have to watch.

What we do in school

  • Outdoor play only before 10:00 am and after 4:00 pm during peak summer weeks.
  • Fans and ventilation on continuously, plus shaded outdoor play areas.
  • Water-play days built into the April timetable (sprinklers, water beads, gentle spraying).
  • A dedicated quiet-rest corner for children who feel the heat.
  • Teachers trained to spot early heat fatigue.

The first week of Grade 1

If your child moves to big school in June, the Chennai summer still hasn’t fully broken. Cotton uniforms, extra water, and packing an ORS sachet in the bag is sensible for the first two weeks.
