The best parks for toddlers in and around Medavakkam

Not every park is a toddler park. Here’s the short list of green spaces in and around Medavakkam, Sabari Nagar, BHEL Nagar and Pallikaranai that actually work for a child under 5 — and what to watch out for.

What makes a park toddler-friendly

  1. Small-child play equipment. Low slide. Low swing. Low everything. Big-kid equipment is a hazard for a two-year-old.
  2. Shade. In Chennai, a park without tree cover is unusable from 10 am to 4:30 pm.
  3. Boundary fence. Toddlers run. A park without any boundary is stressful.
  4. Benches for the adult. You will be there an hour.
  5. Washroom. Or a home within 10 minutes.

Our park shortlist

Medavakkam / BHEL Nagar area

  • The small park behind BHEL Nagar — well-shaded, fenced, gentle slide and a simple swing. Most Sabari Nagar families end up here. Busy between 5–7 pm.
  • Corporation park on Vadakapattu Main Road — bigger, more crowded, a bit of a scramble at weekends. Good tree cover near the entrance.
  • The United Colony playground — gated, for residents mostly, clean and safe.

Sithalapakkam / 200-ft road side

  • Several apartment-complex parks along 200-ft road — some are guest-friendly if you know someone who lives there. Ask in your WhatsApp society group.

Pallikaranai / Kamakoti Nagar

  • Pallikaranai Corporation park near Kamakoti Nagar — larger, good for over-4 children. Can be too crowded for toddlers in the evening.

Weekend drive: farther parks worth the trip

  • Tholkappia Poonga (Adyar Eco-Park) — a weekend destination. Dedicated toddler area, walking paths for parents, a bird-watching tower. 25-minute drive.
  • Anna Nagar Tower Park — a classic. Big but well-organised. Go early morning.
The best park is the one you will actually walk to on a Tuesday evening. Save the big ones for weekends.

Park-day essentials for a Medavakkam toddler

  • Water bottle (already cool)
  • Wet wipes
  • One spare set of clothes
  • A cap
  • Band-aid or two
  • Small snack (banana survives a park trip)

Timings that work

  • April–May: 6:00–7:30 am, or after 6 pm.
  • June–September: 5:30–7 pm works well.
  • October–December: afternoons if the rain holds.
  • January–March: 9:30–11 am is lovely.
